Flu season is coming up quickly, which means we need to be taking extra care of our health so that our immune systems can help fight off any viruses that come our way. There is no way to prevent a cold or flu completely, but there are some healthy habits that can increase your chances of staying healthy and help to reduce your contact with germs. Here are 5 healthy habits that can help to prevent the common cold:

1. Washing your hands

Washing your hands is a very simple yet effective way to help prevent catching a cold or flu. Our hands come into contact with many germs throughout the day, so washing with soap and water frequently can help to prevent spreading germs. Using hand sanitizer that is alcohol-based is also very effective when hand washing is not available.

2. Eat a balanced diet and take your vitamins.

Eating foods like vegetables, dark leafy greens, low-sugar fruits, whole grains, and nuts will help to give you the nutrients you need to keep your immune system strong. Drinking lots of water will also help to flush out any unnecessary toxins in the body. Supplements like multivitamins, vitamins C and D, zinc, and echinacea can also help to prevent or shorten the duration of a cold.

3. Exercise

Getting regular exercise such as cardio, weight lifting, and yoga also helps to keep the immune system strong. Keeping your body moving through daily activity also accelerates the circulation of disease-fighting white blood cells which helps the body fight the common cold.

4. Clean surfaces often

Make sure your home, workplace, and other commonly touched surfaces are all wiped down frequently with disinfecting spray or wipes. Some germs can stay on surfaces for up to a few days, so it’s important to be sanitizing often. Things that should be wiped down often are things like doorknobs, counters, light switches, electronics, remotes, keyboards, toilets, handlebars, tables, chairs, etc.

5. Manage your stress

When your body becomes stressed, your immune system decreases it’s ability to fight off antigens. You can help to manage your stress by meditating, doing yoga, self-care, or by doing one of our salt sessions in our Salt Cave.
